Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2015 Review - Puddles Pity Party

 

I just don't know where to start to review this show. I'm not sure if I love him, or if he terrifies me. Maybe a bit of both?

Puddles is mega tall and imposing. He doesn't speak, and yet holds the small audience in the palm of his hand. They do whatever he wants them to.

And then he sings. His voice is like honey. It makes no sense. And afterwards he gives out Puddles Cuddles. 

Go see this show. Unless you are scared of clowns, because he isn't going to help your fear of them.  Not one bit.

Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2015 Review - Rhys Nicholson

 

This show was super fun. I first saw and fell in love with Rhys at The Shelf.

This show isn't ground breaking or profound, but I really enjoyed it. I loved his timing, just when you think the joke is over, it turns out it isn't. Always pushing the envelope just a little bit further. This show was a whole hour of that. And there were a lot of penis jokes. A great show, but maybe don't take your grandmother.

Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2015 Review - Sammy J and Randy

 

Why oh why haven't I ever been to see these guys before?

Sure, I'd seen them on the TV, and I'd laughed, but nothing compared to how much I laughed when I saw their whole show. These guys produced one of the tightest hours of comedy I've seen in a long time. Their timing was impeccable. It was impossible to know what parts were scripted and what they were making up as they went along. I love that.

And they're dirty. Filthy even. 

Just wonderful. I defy you to go to this show and not have a good time.

Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2015 Review - The Shelf (Part One)

 

I heart The Shelf.  Hard.

It pops up a few times a year for three week seasons and I have never failed to have a great time.

Brainchild of Justin Hamilton and Adam Richard, the guests are many and varied, so it's hard to accurately review this show.  I can tell you though that I've been to several seasons now, and I can only think of a couple of acts that I didn't like. Each act is only on for a maximum of about 10 minutes. This is both good and bad, if you don't like them, they will soon be gone.  If you do like them, they will soon be gone. But I have gone to see entire shows from people I have seen here, so it tends to give you a good idea if you will like them or not.

Because it's been going on for so long, there are a lot of 'in-jokes' that happen (something that became obvious to me last season when I took some new people along for the night and they looked a bit confused at times) but they are brief, and the rest of it is usually just damn good comedy.

Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2015 Review - Pajama Men

 

I'd seen these guys do a couple of bits on TV, but had never seen them do a whole show. A mate insisted that I see them, and given that sometimes I do as I'm told, off we went.

They are VERY good at what they do. I found most of the show really funny.  Wearing pajamas and with only two chairs on the stage, the way they conjure up a story is wonderful. I enjoyed it a lot.  I think I may have even loved it if I was more familiar with the story of the Three Muskateers (but that's my fault, not theirs).
