Five Question Friday

Ahhh Friday, sweet Friday.  You seemed to take forever to get here, but you arrived!  Huzzah!

Click on the button, link up your blog and join in the fun!

1. Do you apologize to your kids?
I don't have kids.  I'd like to think that if I did I would apologise if it was pointed out to me that I was in the wrong.

2. What color are your nails right now?
As a general rule I don't paint my nails, I hardly see the point when I bite them.  Every couple of years I seem to get fake ones for a few months though, starting out with a pretend french manicure and usually ending up in something purple.

3. When you were growing up, how difficult was it for you to stay home from school sick? (As in, did you have to vomit or just say "I don't feel good".)
It was EASY!  (Mum, you don't read my blog, do you?)  We lived an hours bus ride from school, so all I had to do was pretend to be sick until it was safely 10 minutes down the road and I got the day at home.

4. When is the last time you bought a new comforter for your bed?
When we got engaged we used some money we got as a present to buy a new duck down doona.  I got a new cover for it about two months ago.  I have to be restrained from buying linen, I love it!  It's like the obsession other women seem to have for shoes.

5. Favorite website(s)?
Oh, so many!  I love Facebook and Twitter, eBay and far too many blogs to mention, they're all on my blog roll over there to the right ----------------------------->
Lori's is a favourite though.  And Peter's.

Must go, the best sister in the universe (mine!) is cooking Meatloaf tonight!  Yay!

Birthday Wishes

Dear Santa, Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, Jesus and any other mythical creatures who might be reading,

For my birthday (which is coming up soon-ish) I would like the following:

* A cat that is willing to eat the Costco-sized bag of dry cat food currently in my cupboard

* A billion dollars.  Obviously.

* At least one pair of glasses like these:

I hope they come in purple!
* Someone to clean my house once a week for at least a decade.

* Something shiny from Tiffany & Co.

* Socks that are unable to disappear on me almost as fast as I buy them.

* A TV for my bedroom.

* Someone to show me where I packed all my jewellery when we moved because I can't find it and I can't be bothered unpacking a gazillion boxes.

* An in-ground, heated pool.  Hell, even a cold, above-ground one would do!

* John Farnham concert tickets.

* A unicorn!

* A new car.  One for Chyken too.

I feel these are all reasonable requests and I will leave out some beer, coins, carrots, cookies and a crown of thorns for you on Birthday Eve in exchange.

Thanks in advance,

Jo xx

Musical Monday

On Saturday I was lucky enough to see the first preview performance of the new Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, Love Never Dies.  It was amazing!  If you are anywhere near Melbourne you should get tickets.  Seriously!

Here a couple of the songs.  Not the full production numbers unfortunately, but footage from the sitzprobe.

Enjoy!

Five Question Friday

I haven't done this in a while, but today I decided it was time.

I've currently got broken sinuses. I spent yesterday in bed and this morning as well. I'm starting to feel a bit better this afternoon.

Click on the button, link up your blog and join in the fun!

1. Do you and your spouse go to bed at the same time?
Depends, but usually not.  I usually go first because I need more beauty sleep.

2. A question for the ladies...What kind of facial hair do you like on your man?
I like his goatee.  He looks creepy when he shaves it off, but he also looks creepy with a full beard.

3. What's the worst vacation you've ever taken?
I do not believe there is such a thing as a bad vacation.  Any sort of holiday is good holiday!

4. What's the first-ever blog you followed?
Two Bad Days.  Stunning photography.

5. Do you enjoy amusement parks?
I like the idea of them, but I don't like rides.  However, they usually have fairy floss and I do love fairy floss.

Dessert-A-Rama!

A selection of the things I have recently either made or eaten, or in some cases, both!

Banana cupcakes.  I used sour cream in place of the milk in the cake and cream cheese instead of butter in the icing.  Delish!  These were given away as Mother's Day Presents to great acclaim.

You cannot have ANZAC day without ANZAC biscuits.  Except that I had gastro, and couldn't even keep icy poles down.  A couple of days later I made a batch and they were worth the wait!

On the weekend we went to San Churro.  Do you have a San Churro near you?  Have you been there?  It is AMAZING!  I had a hot chocolate and shared some churros with Chyken.  It was all very very nommy!

Last night I went out for dinner with my Mum.  Dessert was the above tremendous banana fritter.  With the current price of bananas nudging $15 a kilo here, I think paying $9 for everything you see on that plate was a pretty good deal.

What has been floating your dessert boat lately?

Today I am grateful for dessert.  Obviously.

Vlog - The Dialect Game

This is a first for Chickens and Bees, a video blog post!  Rachele from The Nearsighted Owl did one of these last week and I have been waiting until I got my voice back to do my own.

I had to say the following words:

Say these words: Aunt, Route, Wash, Oil, Theater, Iron, Salmon, Caramel, Fire, Water, Sure, Data, Ruin, Crayon, Toilet, New Orleans, Pecan, Both, Again, Probably, Spitting image, Alabama, Lawyer, Coupon, Mayonnaise, Syrup, Pajamas, Caught

And then I had to answer these questions:

What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house?
What is the bug that when you touch it, it curls into a ball?
What is the bubbly carbonated drink called?
What do you call gym shoes?
What do you say to address a group of people?
What do you call the kind of spider that has an oval-shaped body and extremely long legs?
What do you call your grandparents?
What do you call the wheeled contraption in which you carry groceries at the supermarket?
What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining?
What is the thing you change the TV channel with?
So, without further ado, here I am... In the flesh.  Hold on to you hats!

I would LOVE it if you played along... Leave me a comment with a link to your version of the dialect game!

Today I am grateful for the heater.

Another Open Letter

Dear Valued Customer,

It is time we addressed a few issues:

a) There is no such thing as a 'standard box' nor a 'standard suitcase'.  Have you been in a suitcase shop recently?

b) The terms 'fairly light' and 'not very heavy' are not appropriate responses to the question 'How much does the item weigh?'

c) If you have the item you are shipping in front of you and you are looking at it and YOU can't tell me the size, how do you expect little old me who is stuck on the other end of the phone to know?

d) If I ask you 'Is it a box or a bag that you are sending?' and you answer 'Neither, it is a carton', you can pretty much guarantee that I think you are a fucktard.

e) If you 'knew you were going to be asked that' then why were you not prepared with the answer?

f) The metric system of measurement was introduced into Australia in the 1970's.  Even if you are the type of person who is resistant to change, after 40 years don't you think it is more than time for you to get on board with it?

Please have a long hard look at yourself before you call me again.

Love,

Jo

P.S. Is it really too much to ask for you to listen to all the options on the IVR before you choose one?

What Took Them So Long?

Before you read any further you should click here and read this article.  "The Catholic archdiocese of Melbourne is defrocking every priest convicted of sexual offences against children."

Can you name me any other profession where someone who breaks a law connected with their job is allowed to continue doing the job?  Police convicted of behaving unethically are no longer allowed to be in the police force, are they?

I wonder if they are going to do anything about the priests that were convicted of abuse but still buried with full priestly honours?  This one in particular, Kevin O'Donnell?

I could go on for hours and hours about how badly the Catholic Church has handled the whole issue of abuse, but it has already been done for me in a book called Hell On The Way To Heaven.  It is truly eye-opening.  Well worth the read.  Although probably best not to read it in one sitting like I did, it's not a 'happy' book by any means.

If you. or someone you know, is/was a victim of black collar crime, a good place to start is the Broken Rites website.  Don't let them keep getting away with this!

Wise Words

I have started this post at least twelve times, but I couldn't find the right words to explain how I feel about the death of Osama bin Laden and the images I have seen in the hours since.

In the end, I decided I might never find them, but that was OK, because someone else has already explained it perfectly...

"Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that.

Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that"

— Martin Luther King Jr.
